MOUNT ZION CEMETERY

The Mount Zion Cemetery is located off FM 357 South, 5 miles out of Apple Springs. A Cemetery Road sign direct one to follow the dirt road East for 1 mile to the entrance. This old cemetery has served as a public burial site for the inhabitants of Apple Springs, Alabama Creek, Trevat and Helmic Communities since its inception.

The Cemetery is within the bounds of the J. J. Warren Survey. It is thought, as stated by Mrs. Delma Williams, that Mr. John Warren had given ten acres of land to the Mount Zion Baptist Church and Cemetery around the time of the Civil War. No record has been found. A recorded deed does exist conveying 7.5 ac. of land to the Mount Zion Baptist Church by J. A. Trevathan and wife, Lucinda, on October 24, 1894. The land was later deeded to the Mount Zion Cemetery Association on October 13, 1973.

Legend has it that Spanish Conquistadors, in the latter half of the 18th century, passed thought this area on their way from the Gulf Coast to Nogalus Prairie and thence to Mission Tejas in Weches, along the Old Spanish Trail. They camped on this hill because of an available spring water supply nearby, thereby establishing a burial site near the center of the Cemetery. These sites help make up approximately 201 unidentified graves in the Cemetery. This old Cemetery is the final resting place for 29 Confederate States of America veterans and two Mexican War veterans.

Efforts to determine the date that the Mount Zion Baptist Church was established here have evaded discovery. The oldest identifiable gravestone is that of Mary L. Hill, daughter of Dr. J. T. and S. J. Hill, with death date of July 4, 1823. Additionally, wording on the stone of Sarah Womack, wife of David Womack, reads “Born January 1 1789; Died December 1858. Mother of 12 children, all raised to be grown. Consistent member of the Church for 40 years.” Subtracting back the 40 years from her death date of 1858 would place a Church at the site in 1818. Sadly, the historic old frame church steadily deteriorated until, in the mid-1970’s, it was demolished. A new pavilion-type structure was built in its place providing a shady peaceful shelter for those seeking the gravesites of their ancestors.

The first list of gravestones was completed in 1978 by Anzo Pyle English, Cindy Morris and Ellen Pyle. A second listing was completed in 1989-90 by Myrth Standley of Helmic, Texas, who developed a system that helped in locating particular graves sites. This work was included in ‘Trinity County, Texas Cemeteries’, published in 1992. In April 2004, Mount Zion Cemetery was updated on April 15, 2004 by the volunteer team of Virginia Buckle Arnold, Chrm., Mary Abshire, Vickie Abshire Kessinger, Meta Witt-Odom and Ellen Pyle.
