David Crockett National Forest Site
Cemetery information updated May 1, 2005

 

Cemetery is located on federal land.  From Groveton; US 287 southeast to FM 2262. Left (NE) on FM 2262 0.3 miles to US Forest Service Road 573 on north side (no sign). North 1.0 miles to cemetery on east side 75 yards in woods, opposite small grass pull-in.  This site is located in pine woods. You may need an escort to find the cemetery. 

This lost cemetery was visited in September 2004.  When Thomas L. Jones of Groveton described the cemetery for a previous edition of Trinity County Cemeteries, he stated the cemetery "is an area about 65 by 65 feet containing sunken places and a small fenced area that could be a pioneer cemetery. No identifying markers were found."  Chris Dyer, Cemetery Survey Group, Texas Historical Commission (THC), James Halpern, Archeologist with US Forestry Service, Davy Crockett National Forest, and Dee Dee King, Chair, Trinity County Historical Commission surveyed the gravesite. Nothing is known about the family that may have lived close to this cemetery.  We did discover a sunken area that may be another gravesite not far from the above fenced area, but did not spot more sunken gravesites.
