| Would you like to hear good old stories about Moran?? Newspaper readers in Lubbock , TX have been hearing them for years from the former Editor (now Editor-Emeritus & weekly columnist) of the "Lubbock Avalanche-Journal": B U R L E P E T T I T Many of Burle's columns each Sunday concern his remembrances of growing up in a small town called Moran. Burle is a 1952 graduate of Moran High School and I wish to thank him for allowing me to link to his columns from the MHS Alumni Website. To read Burle's recent columns, please click HERE

DO YOU KNOW THESE CHILDREN???
The above photo was sent to me recently and I would like to know if there is anyone who can identify these children? The back of the photo says that this is Willie Rigsby's class at Moran in 1928. Ms. Rigsby is obviously the lady standing in the middle. If you have any information, e-mail me at DBrooks466@aol.com. Thanks!!
DO YOU HAVE THIS PHOTO???
DO YOU HAVE ANY OLD MORAN PHOTOS???
The above photo of downtown Moran (looking west) was taken in 1924. This was used in an article about Moran in a 1970's issue of the "Old Timer Magazine". Further to the right, Ward's Hardware Store and the two-story bank were pictured, but I was unable to scan that portion of the photo here. I scanned this photo from the article. I have not been able to locate the actual photograph. It may have belonged to the late Albert Morris of Moran, but his daughter, Mae Delle Jones, says she doesn't remember it. Does anyone else, by any chance, have this photo in their possession? I'm trying to gather copies of photos of Moran from the 1920's and before that the Moran Historical Museum may not have. I will display these photos on this website. Many old photos like this I have found were from picture postcards. If anyone has the photo above or any other Moran photos in their family's possession, please e-mail me, Duston Brooks. Thanks!!!! I

THE 1999 MHS HOMECOMING
The 1999 Moran High School Homecoming was held October 15th and 16th. Approximately 200 exes attended. Guest speaker for the ex-students program, held at the MHS Gymnasium, was Burle Pettit (Class of 1952), editor of the "Lubbock Avalanche-Journal" newspaper. The oldest class member present was 98 year-old Clarence Garlitz (Class of 1919). Chosen as the MHS 1999 Coming-Home King and Queen were Randy Hudson (Class of 1971) and Lynda Jones Weatherby (Class of 1968).
The Homecoming this year was organized by the Class of 1948. They should be congratulated for a job well-done. The next Homecoming is scheduled for Fall, 2001. However, no one at this year's program volunteered to handle the 2001 Homecoming. It is a large undertaking, but hopefully someone will volunteer to help keep the Homecoming going. More exes (especially those that graduated from MHS in the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's) are encouraged to come to the next Homecoming. Hopefully, the MHS Homecoming won't become a thing of the past for a very long time.
"TIME CAPSULE" FOUND AT MORAN CEMETERY
Recently, the two stone arches supported by pillars that serve as two of the five entrances to Moran Cemetery had begun to noticeably decay. Particularly on the western arch, stones had begun to fall out and a large crack had appeared, signaling a potential accident if something was not done to repair it. So, the Moran Cemetery Association Board of Directors hired a stonemason to see what could be done to fix this problem. After examining the western arch, the stonemason reported that it would cost much less to tear the arch down rather than to repair it. He would therefore tear down both of the arches and leave the pillars standing. On December 16, 1999, as he began to tear down the western arch, the upper portion of the east pillar accidentally collapsed along with the arch. Later, a crew was brought in to clear away the stones. In the process of the clean-up, Precint 3 Commissioner Jimmy Brooks discovered an old whiskey bottle wedged in one of the stone crevices. Inside the bottle was a document placed there in 1933 by the workmen who built the cemetery's stone fence, along with the pillars and arches. The document lists all those who played a part in the construction. The contents of the document appear below:
