Panola Co. Voter List, A

The pages of the Mechanics Lien Book No. 1 contain some hidden treasurers such as the following list of voters. There are 945 names on this list and it covers the time period from September 1865 through August 1866. Voter registration at this time was available only to white males. As this was in the days immediately following the close of the Civil War, voters were obliged to sign an oath forsaking their loyalty to the Confederacy and pledging their allegiance to the United States of America. As you can see on this list, some men began the registration procedure, then refused to sign the oath and the notation "No Voter" was then entered by their name and they were refused the right to vote.
