Became Methodist Minister in 1851
In a note picked up from Wise County, Texas Genealogy Bulletin, "The
Rev. J R Bellamy, presiding elder, organized a church at Decatur in 1862, although there had been preaching there
earlier" from Methodism Moves Across Texas by Walter N. Vernon, page 76. This information was in relation to
the organization of the Methodist church in Decatur, Texas, by Stephen Mathus Gose (who is a descendant of Philip
Gose of Wythe Co, VA. Phillip was a brother to Barbara Gose who married Gideon Huddle). The Gose family
married into the Huddle family and J R Bellamy's daughter, Elizabeth, married John Asa Dial.
Information from Carol Randall (12-6-2000): Rev J R Bellamy preached all over Panola county as an intinerant
preacher. Some of the areas and churches he ministered to are:
