1884 is the date when a deed was recorded for land for a school at Alpine. The deed reads, “I, W.P. Pope… in consideration of the interest that I feel as a citizen of said county in the education of the children of my community, donate… unto T.E. Boren, County Judge… for school purposes a part of the Matthew Parker HR, on the waters of Murvaul Bayou, a tributary of the Sabine River, 7 miles west from Carthage… containing one acre of land.” Signed September 16, 1884 by W.P.
