The cemetery identified on the USGS maps as being Davis Cemetery is known locally as Old Walton Cemetery.

This cemetery was located many years ago by local historian Don Austin who stated that the cemetery probably contained 12 – 15 graves, but only one marker survived for any period of time.  However, by the time Austin visited the site that marker was also gone.

The lone marked grave was that of

William Davis, husband of Mary Walton

Born 1809 in VA – Died 1878 in Panola County

Austin stated, “Located in open country on a small knoll with a few trees on it.  Nothing remains here to substantiate the existence of a cemetery; however, this is the forerunner of the nearby Walton Cemetery, named for George Walton, an early settler in this area.

“Walton settled near the site of the old cemetery in 1841 and was buried here along with his wife and, most likely, several other members of his family.”
