Capt. Tuckers company Taylor's Regiment and find him incapable of performing the
duties of his office because of a severe attack of typhoid fever in June last
from which he has never entirely recovered and having chronic dysentery every
since and also because of an incised wound in the left-side just above the
diaphragn causing much difficulty in breathing. I therefore recommend that his
resignation be accepted and he be discharged from service.

Notes for
LUCRETIA
HILL:
Per Jan
Craven:
"Lucretia was my
mother's "Auntie" . She
made the hair wreath and paid for my mother's college education.
Things Mary Phillips
remembers about her Auntie.
She was not an "old maid", but an
" unclaimed blessing".
She owned several rent houses and carried a clip full of keys at her
waist.
She said "Thank the
Lord, there are no rent houses in Heaven"
She used a pearl handled umbrella instead of a walking cane.
Made the hair wreath. the
center part is immediate family, the second circlet is cousins, and the large
outer circlet is friends and pets. (white
flowers on the left side are from her pony's tail)
Used a fan in church pretending to have hot flashed when in her 60's and
70's.
Pinned up curls around her forehead when she napped, called them beau
catchers.
Told of a time when a boy rode miles on horseback to see her but she
refused to see him because he had not told her he was coming.
Made us tea cakes-kept them in the safe (tin on the back porch)
Cashed WWI bonds ($300 per year) for 2 years to send Mary to college.
Helped take care of me when my mother had Typhoid fever.
I was crawling. "

My mother, Mary

She had a bookcase in the entrance hall with many "what-nots"
gathered from friends and her travels with Grandy.
Gave me my first ring..Garnet. I was 7 yrs old. The ring was stolen by a
neighbor girl. Second ring.. blue saphire , I was 9.
Stalegmite from Mamoth Cave. She
used a candle for the tour of the cave and wrote on the cealing of the cave with
the smoke from the candle. This was
before the cave was lighted with elec. lights.
(Mary went to Mamoth Cave years later and saw the smoke on some cealings. The guide told them it was from candles carried by visitors
many years before.)
She would sit on the porch of the house at night and point out star
constillations to us kids.
Had a parrot named Polly who chould talk.
Polly said, "Polly wants to go play with the peckerwoods" and
"Papa, put your shirt on, company's coming"
