MARION COUNTY SHERIFFS
1860 - 1988


Marion County was created in 1860 from Cass County and was named for Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox" of American Revolution fame.  The county was organized in 1860 with Jefferson as the county seat.  There have been twenty-five men ond one lady who have served as sheriff during the history of the county, with one of the men serving twice.

N A Birge - Elected the first sheriff on March 15, 1860; re-elected August 6, 1860 and served until December 1861.

James A H Hosack - Appointed on Dec 16. 1861; elected August 4, 1862; re-elected Aug 1, 1864; appointed Sept 4, 1865 by Gov'r A J Hamilton but resigned the same day.

D Walton - Appointed October 2, 1865 by Gov'r A J Hamilton - resigned the same day.

Charles W Stewart - Appointed Oct 3, 1865 by Gov'r A J Hamilton and served until June 25, 1866.

D D Walton - Elected June 25, 1866 and served until Jan 19, 1867 when he was removed by General J J Reynolds' Special Order #195.

M K Sedberry - Appointed January 19, 1867 and served until November 1867; State Election Register doesn't show, but he may have been appointed by General J J Reynolds' Special Order #195.

Justin M Grigsby - Appointed by General J J Reynolds' Special Order #195 on Nov 1, 1867 and served until February 1869.

J H Roberts - Appointed Feb 6, 1869 by General Canby's Special Order #29; Elected Dec 3, 1869 and served until Dec 1873.

A G Malloy (Mallory) - Elected Dec 2, 1873 and served until April 27, 1874 when he was removed.  No reason was given for his removal.

John M Vines - Appointed sheriff pro tem April 27, 1874 by the District Judge; Elected May 23, 1874 and served until Feb 15, 1876.

T M Bagby - Elected Feb 15, 1876 and served until Nov 5, 1878.

Horace Welch - Elected Nov 5, 1878 and served until Nov 7, 1882.   No entries for November 2, 1880 elections, so it is assumed that he was re-elected at that time.

A U Wright - Elected Nov 4, 1882 and served until Nov 4, 1884.

Ward Taylor, Jr - Elected Nov 4, 1884 and served until Nov 2, 1886.

J M Deware - Elected Nov 2, 1886; re-elected Nov 6, 1888; Nov 4, 1890; Nov 8, 1892; Nov 6, 1894; Nov 3, 1896; and served until Nov 8, 1898.

W S Haywood - Elected Nov 8, 1898; re-elected Nov 6, 1900; Nov 4, 1902; and served until Nov 8, 1904.

Will S Terry - Elected Nov 8, 1904; re-elected Nov 6, 1906 and served until Nov 3, 1908.

W B Stallcup - Elected Nov 3, 1908; re-elected Nov 8, 1910 and served until Nov Nov 5, 1912.

B B Rogers - Elected Nov 7, 1922 and served until Oct 16, 1923 when he was killed.

Thomas W Taylor - Appointed Oct 22, 1923; elected Nov 4, 1924; re-electedNov 2, 1926; Nov 6, 1928; Nov 4, 1930; Nov 8, 1932; Nov 6 1934 and served until May 12, 1936 when he resigned.

J Alec Brown - Appointed May 13, 1936; elected Nov 3, 1936 and served until Mar 10, 1937 when he was "assassinated".  No explanation was given for the assassination.

Ethel ( Mrs J Alec ) Brown - Appointed Mar 13, 1937 and served until Jan 1, 1939. 

Tom W Morris - Elected Nov 8, 1938; re-elected Nov 5, 1940; Nov 3, 1942 and served until Jan 1, 1945.

W J "Joe" Riggs - Elected Nov 7, 1944; re-elected Nov 5, 1946; Nov 2, 1948 and served until Jan 1, 1951.

Luke W Walker - Elected Nov 7, 1950; re-elected Nov 4, 1952; Nov 2, 1954; Nov 6, 1956;, Nov 8, 1960; Nov 3, 1964; Nov 5, 1968 and served until Nov 3, 1970.   Longest served time as sheriff.

A G "George" Whatley - Elected Nov 3, 1970; re-elected Nov 7, 1972; Nov 2, 1976; Nov 4, 1980 and served until Jan 1, 1985. 

Walter S Thomas - Elected Nov 6, 1984; re-elected Nov 8, 1988.
