William J. FERGUSSON, the father of Effa Lee FERGUSSON PADGETT, was jailer in Marion County when Abe Rothschild was on trial for the murder of Diamond Bessie. His wife, Augusta Catherine SLAYTON FERGUSSON, (Gusta) was the daughter of Sanford G. SLAYTON, a surveyor who moved from Pittsylvania County, VA to Texas during the Republic of Texas.
Sanford G. SLAYTON and his mother, Lucy SHELTON SLAYTON, each received Class 3 Headright Landgrants of 640 acres each from the Republic of Texas. They settled in Marion, Cass and Upshur Counties. A cousin of Sanford's father, Arthur SLAYDON (who was also named Arthur SLAYDON, son of Arthur SLAYDON) received First Class Headrights Landgrants in the Republic of Texas. Sanford's father (Arthur SLAYDON) never came to Texas. Sanford's father (Arthur, son of Daniel Slaydon) died in 1811 in Virginia.
Sanford's G. SLAYTON's grandfather, Daniel SLAYDON, and father, Arthur SLAYDON, surveyed land and roads in colonial Virginia. Sanford G. SLAYTON surveyed land in the Republic of Texas and in the new state of Texas.
